There is considerable documentation and support available for SharePoint implementation in the business environment, but when we set up a SharePoint portal during 2006/2007, support for the education environment was either non existent or came in the form of expensive consultancies – which even then did not always appear to understand some of the needs of a school.
The purpose of this booklet is to provide schools with some guidance and direction in setting up the front end of SharePoint i.e. you have installed SharePoint on a server – now what? Perhaps you have a basic system running – how can you develop it further? It may be that this booklet will also help schools at an earlier stage who are considering purchasing SharePoint – is it right for you?
SharePoint Design for Schools is aimed at schools who are considering or have purchased Microsoft SharePoint to develop their Learning Platform. It will not explain step by step what you need to do, nor will it attempt to anticipate all of the questions you may have along the way. However, it is a result of the real life experience of setting up a wide ranging SharePoint portal in a large comprehensive school,, used by all students (Years 7 to 13), staff (teaching and non teaching), and parents.
SharePoint Design for Schools, therefore, attempts to highlight some of the areas where information was lacking during this process – areas which we could have done with more information on.
Some of the information here has been gleaned from other sources which we found useful at the time – all of these sources have been acknowledged with links provided in the text.
In addition, SharePoint Design for Schools includes a case study of the SharePoint portal implemented at the school, with details on the structure, component areas, facilities developed and so on. Of particular interest may be the section on the implementation of Capita’s SharePoint Learning Gateway web parts, enabling staff, students and parents to view live data from the school’s SIMS.net database
